Exposing The Networks (Of America's Suicide Bombers)

For obvious reasons, this is absolutely the bravest column I've seen today:

"How I Was Drawn Into the Cult of David Petraeus"

There's a lot of good stuff there ("I was insufficiently critical") on how someone slowly gets drawn into cultish thinking ("I didn’t realize I was thinking in their terminology") but here's my money quote:
Another irony that Petraeus’ downfall reveals is that some of us who egotistically thought our coverage of Petraeus and counterinsurgency was so sophisticated were perpetuating myths without fully realizing it.

Considering the Right's desire to get to the bottom of things, after Romney's lousy election, there should be a lot of folks discovering that - and admitting it - right about now.

Oh, and speaking of Romney, the Republicans, and the Right's failure, and Mormon talk show host Glenn Beck's recent statement on God's cruelty, is it too soon to ask if the LDS shouldn't be coming to terms with the fallacy of The White Horse Prophecy - and do so publicly?

“In one of his first appearances on Fox News, Glenn Beck sent a coded message to the nation’s six million Mormons — or at least those Mormons who believe in what the Latter-day Saints call “the White Horse Prophecy.”
“We are at the place where the Constitution hangs in the balance,” Beck told Bill O’Reilly on November 14, 2008, just after President Obama’s election. “I feel the Constitution is hanging in the balance right now, hanging by a thread unless the good Americans wake up.”
The Constitution is hanging by a thread.
Most Americans would have heard this as just another bit of overblown commentary and thought nothing more of it. But to those familiar with the White Horse Prophecy, it was an unmistakable signal.

Naaaw - as long as that "unmistakable signal" is still going out - it can never be too soon,….

  1. I remember when some of the right wing blogs were pitching out the idea of Petraeus as a possible GOP presidential candidate. I'll admit to an inside track there, because one of my kids actually knows the general -- we laughed and laughed at that one.

Not a bad general (although a general is only as good as his subordinates), in some ways a very good leader, but...let's just say the affair wasn't a big shocking surprise in this household. Eh, is what it is. And no, his personality wouldn't really fit the present presidential job description very well (and to date he's been pretty wise to stay away from it -- which should be a lesson to some: don't tempt him with it).
